Welcome To The Mountain

As we moved from place to place as a kid, never wanting to stand out as a newcomer it was super important to me to learn the subtleties of the local terminology ASAP.  Do they say the sidewalk is slick or is it slippery, where's the washroom or restroom, napkin or serviette? Being me was complicated at times.

Fast forward to now and local jargon here, on the mountain vs. in the valley. "It's the best restaurant 'on the mountain'" (meaning anywhere around here) and "We're going 'to the valley' for the weekend" (somewhere down there, the Phoenix-ish area). Not yet sure if Tucson is included in that.. I'll get right on that lol.

Let's Take a Second Look

Here's a closer look at that cute little tiny house behind the impressive grand entrance gate that I showed you yesterday, a great little fixer upper. With my vast carpentry experience, I've diagnosed the problem with the roof. Seems that 7 screws wasn't quite enough for the job.. only take about an hour. Then, wahlah, home sweet cabin!

Ordinary Miracles

Hans Christian Andersen: "The whole world is a series of miracles, but we're so used to them we call them ordinary things."

Spectacular isn't how I'd describe spring here, but I do see occasional emergence of tiny miracles.

The Big Chill

Drove by the local High School today and, unlike where I come from, despite the fact that there's 6" of snow on the ground and temps dipped to below zero overnight, school was actually still in session. Ha! What a novel idea (said with a slight bit of sarcasm).

Tales From a Reliable Source

Before the thaw of spring, everyone gathered at the river for the annual community event, ice cutting day! That's when the men used special ice cutting tools to cut through the 2-3 feet of ice thickness. A special lunch was provided by the ladies. At the end of the day, each family took home a large chunk of the Sheyenne River for their underground 'refrigeration' that lastest well into summer.

Winter Lois Lane

Notice 'the wash' at the bottom of the hill that I've mentioned before. In summer downpours, the water fills in and crosses the road there bringing with it a lot of sand. Makes getting home rather interesting sometimes.
